Native American resistance in the Northwest: Tributes in film
Be inspired by courageous fights of Puget Sound area tribes for survival and sovereignty as shown in two powerful documentaries. Back to the River, a 40-minute film, features historic footage and recent interviews with leaders and participants in the “Fish Wars” along the banks of the Nisqually and Puyallup Rivers. The defiance of Indigenous men, women and children ultimately affirmed that U.S. and state governments must abide by treaty promises.
Also featured: We’re Still Here, an 8-minute interview of Cecile Hansen, who at the time was chairperson of the Duwamish Tribe. Seattle sits upon the territory of the Duwamish people, who are still deprived of federal recognition and resources as a tribe. Discussion follows the films.
Special guest Nancy Shippentower
will introduce Back to the River. Interviewed in the film, her family played a major role in winning fishing rights in the region.

Online movie showing
The Abortion Pill

Beginning with current attempts to ban it, this 50-minute film draws startling parallels with the battle waged over nearly two decades to keep RU486, now called mifepristone, from the U.S. market. The story of the pill’s fascinating history begins with its invention in 1982 in France, travels to Germany, England, India, Brazil, China and finally to clinical trials in the United States. Featuring rare historical footage of political, scientific, corporate, and activist leaders from both sides of the abortion battle. It also shows how the same arguments and tactics are used today by anti-abortionists.
Also on the agenda, learn more about the upcoming Supreme Court case on mifepristone. This case threatens access to the pill even in states that protect abortion access. SCOTUS will start hearing the case on March 26 and a ruling is expected in June. Strategize on what can be done in response.
