Solidarity with Syrian Women
A coalition of women’s groups, the Syrian Women’s Council, put out a call to send messages of support to Syrian women facing the threat of a new theocratic misogynistic regime in their country following the overthrow of the brutal Baath regime. They issued a strong program of demands to be included as equal participants in the new state. Radical Women sent the statement below, which the Women’s Council published online in Kurdish and Turkish in the Women News Agency Jinha.
Below is Radical Women’s message of solidarity. Send other written or video statements to jineoloji@riseup.net.
To our courageous sisters in Syria,
Radical Women sends revolutionary feminist solidarity from the United States and Australia. We applaud your declaration that women, who suffered the most under the Baath regime, must be in the forefront of creating a new society from the rubble of Assad’s long and brutal rule. For too long, you have borne the brunt of imperialist-backed barbarism. You have resisted and you will not tolerate another repressive state. Your determination speaks to all oppressed peoples throughout the world, including those inside the imperialist powers.
We salute Syrian women’s historic struggle to reclaim equality as full participants in society. The united front you are forming of women of all oppressed ethnic and religious minorities is a powerful example to movements everywhere, as has Kurdish resistance to femicide and genocide. Like them, we believe that women’s liberation means freedom for everyone and an egalitarian, democratic society that can make our planet liveable. As socialist feminists we stand in solidarity with all people struggling against oppression and genocide, from Gaza to Northeast Syria and beyond.
