Meet Melbourne Radical Women: article and video interview!

There will be protests across the country. Join us in Melbourne to make the message very clear that Zionist war criminals are not welcome here! Come with us! Contact rw.aus@radicalwomen.org

Femicide is on the rise. Australia’s count of women murdered in 2025 is 62. The death toll for the first month of this year is already six. Trans Day of Remembrance recorded 28 trans women killed. Murders of First Nations women are 13 times higher than those of non-Aboriginal women.

But these horrific figures are not the full picture of femicide. Treating the cause as male violence does not explain the devastation or offer answers. Plus the stats don’t account for deaths in custody and other forms of state violence. Nor do they cover the carnage from environmental destruction, war and genocide, unsafe and insecure work, denial of bodily autonomy, anti-disability abuse, homelessness, destitution, malnutrition and the impact of rampant bigotry.

In honouring International Women’s Day, we’ll hear dynamic voices of resistance against an inhuman system that centres its violence on women. And we’ll discuss how to end it!

Come and hear:

  • Kelly Flanagan, Wiradjuri woman, survivor of family violence, intergenerational trauma and member of FIGJAM (Formerly Incarcerated Girls Justice Advocates Melbourne)
  • Rathy Barthlote, organiser of the 100-day refugee encampment outside Home Affairs and co-founder of Refugee Women Action for Visa Equality
  • Maudie Osborne, Community and Public Sector Unionist, anti-fascist organiser and Radical Women member

All genders are welcome! Enjoy a delicious buffet after the program. Tickets are $25 solidarity, $15 waged and $10 unwaged for the program and buffet.

Tickets are available in advance through Humanitix. For more info, contact rw.aus@radicalwomen.org.

2025 ACTIVITIES ARCHIVE

Monday, 26 January, 10.30 am

Join us at the Invasion Day protest. We will be marching with the newly formed Naarm Anti-fascist United Front (NAUF), which Radical Women and Freedom Socialist Party are part of.

As well as taking a stand against fascists and the far right, we stand with First Nations peoples across this continent and will prioritise the demands raised by the Invasion Day rally organiser, Warriors of the Aboriginal Resistance:

– Freedom for our peoples, lands and waters

– Treaty and truth for our old people and for future generations

– Justice for babies and kids so they can grow up safe, loved, and free

– An end to deaths in custody, forced removals, and ongoing violence from systems built on invasion.

Join us at 10:30 am on the corner of Little Bourke Street and Spring Streets. Wear purple.

Sunday, 11 January, 12.00 pm
in Melbourne

As the Albanese government was cracking down on our rights to free speech and protest, it invited Israeli president and accused war criminal, Isaac Herzog, to Australia. The Palestinian death toll is over well 70,000 — the majority women and children. The tents housing survivors have been hit by bitter winter flooding. Babies are freezing to death, and communities are starving.

Herzog is named by the UN International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory as a perpetrator of this calculated, deliberate genocide.

To call out Zionism for this unspeakable inhumanity (ongoing since 1947) is promptly smeared as antisemitic “hate speech.” This fallacious conflation of anti-Zionism and antisemitism has extended to blaming the Bondi shooting on two-and-a-half years of widespread organised solidarity for Palestine. Palestinians’ struggle for freedom and our right to stand with them are criminalised and intertwined.

The meeting of these heads of two imperialist, genocidal settler states can have only one purpose: to tighten their criminal ties even more and fortify this latest onslaught on our rights to resist.

On January 11, we must come out in our many thousands to protest Herzog’s visit. Stand with the Palestinian struggle and for our right to do so!

Join up with Freedom Socialist Party and Radical Women. You can contact RW at rw.aus@radicalwomen.org See you on the 11th!

Tuesday, 25 November, 7.00 pm

While police violence against grassroots protest is not new, it is escalating. Corporate interests feel threatened by our rising organised resistance, so the state is cracking down. Scenes of police protecting weapons expos, Israeli shipping companies and far-right rallies, firing on and arresting protesters are common. The Victorian Labor government is pushing plans to give them even more powers.

For activists, the role of cops in a capitalist state isn’t a mystery. But we don’t have to take it. First Nations families demanding justice for loved ones killed in custody have shown this. Let’s talk about what our movements and communities can do to hold police to account. All genders welcome!

Sunday, 31 August, 11.00 am

As attacks on workers, First Nations, migrants, refugees, women and LGBTIQ+ folks escalate against the global backdrop of increased authoritarianism and a genocidal war, fascists will be taking to streets across the country. In Melbourne, the racist, xenophobic “March for Australia” will take place this Sunday at the same time as the weekly Palestine rallies. This calls for unity in showing them that they shall not pass!

Our best defence is turning out in huge numbers, as we did last Sunday, with a clear message, “No to Fascism!” No to any racism or xenophobia!” “Free, Free Palestine!”

Palestine rally organisers are calling everyone to be at the State Library at 11.00 am. If you’d like to join the rally as part of a safe, disciplined contingent, then contact Radical Women: rw.aus@radicalwomen.org

Tuesday, 12 August, 5.30 pm

Victoria’s Allan Labor government is preparing to introduce a bill aimed at cracking down hard on our right to protest. Radical Women is part of a large coalition of grassroots groups organising to defeat its repressive plan. Come with us on Tuesday! Let us know by contacting rw.aus@radicalwomen.org, or look for our placards at the steps of Parliament.

For info about the proposed laws, read here. See you Tuesday!

Saturday, 2 August, 5.00 pm

As corporate and right-wing assaults ramp up on environmental protections, take inspiration from women leading resistance. This stirring 48-minute film profiles organisers from Norway, India, Canada, and Kenya. They are tackling climate change through policy, protest and education. By building youth organisations and mobilising their indigenous communities, they counter fossil fuel corporations and the many injustices of climate change.

Join us for discussion about the centrality of women’s leadership in the fight for climate justice. All genders welcome.

This event is a fundraiser for the Freedom Socialist and Freedom Socialist Organiser, two newspapers giving you revolutionary and optimistic socialist feminist writing from the grass roots.

Tickets are $25 solidarity, $15 waged and $10 unwaged and include a delicious finger food buffet. BYO drinks. Advance tickets are available through Humanitix.

Doors open at 5.00 pm. The film starts at 5.30 pm

Radical Women discussion circle in honour of Stonewall 2025

Photo: Radical Women at Melbourne’s International Women’s Day march 2025

Join us to mark the anniversary of the Stonewall riots, a momentous rebellion which kick-started the fight for queer liberation. We’ll pay tribute to the trans women of colour, butch dykes and working class queers, who were on the frontlines in 1969 and whose leadership remains so important today.

Learn about the origins of trans oppression and appreciate the inextricable connection with the oppression of women and queers. Join in the discussion about the centrality of bodily autonomy as we tease out why biological determinism is a dead end. Share your ideas about how to resist attacks on trans youth healthcare in both the U.S. and Australia.

Saturday, 14 June, 4.00 pm

Australia’s revolutionary feminist press reaches a milestone!

“Eye-opening,” “solution oriented,” “optimistic,” “movement-building,” “a massive achievement” are snippets of praise from appreciative local, national and international readers. Growing from a bi-annual magazine 40 years ago into a quarterly publication, the Organiser has always come directly from the battle lines of struggle and the perspective of the most exploited, abused and uncompromising fighters.

Join the celebration! Enjoy greetings from near and far; music from Terry Costello, unionist, working class balladeer and protest singer; a luscious buffet and great company. Hear rousing words from Amelia Taylor, socialist feminist and member of the Democracy for CPSU caucus; Rathy Barthlote, founder of Refugee Women Action for Visa Equality and movement leader; and Gwynnyth Evans, lifelong unionist and passionate internationalist. Everybody’s welcome! BYO drinks.

The event is a fundraiser for the Organiser. Tickets: $10 unwaged, $15 waged and $25 solidarity. Advance ticket purchases are available through Humanitix.

Sunday, 13 April, 1.00 pm

Join up with Radical Women and Freedom Socialist Party for this rally on Sunday — three weeks before the federal election. No matter who wins, 8,000 refugees will still live with terrifying uncertainty. Let’s ramp up the fight for permanent visas for all 8,000, right now. And fight for open borders with full citizenship rights.

We will meet 12.45 pm at Princes Bridge. The action then marches to Tom’s Block, St Kilda Road, opposite Victorian College of the Arts. To let us know you’re coming, contact rw.aus@radicalwomen.org. Or look out for our placards.

Saturday, 5 April, 1.00 pm

One-session discussion circle

“From leadership of a communal society marked by equality, women have been degraded and reduced to servitude under capitalism.” Socialist feminist trailblazer and Radical Women founder, Clara Fraser, was speaking in 1972. Because we’ve been brutalised for so long, she said, women are rising as the “ultimate revolutionaries.”

Join in discussion of this pioneering work to explore woman as leader, who defies the odds.

Are you fed up with living in a world where CEOs rake in billions while working people and the poor lose their jobs, services and homes? Where, across the world, millions are dispossessed and killed by war, poverty and environmental destruction? Where being a woman, a person of colour and/or queer means the deck is stacked against you? Do you dream of overhauling society from the ground up? Want to work with other bad-ass warriors?

Then join like-minded people in exploring this unique and valuable sourcebook for revolutionary feminist organising and thinking. Discover how women’s leadership is crucial to achieving a world we fantasise about — where people, peace and the planet are the highest priorities.

March with Radical Women on Invasion Day

January 26 is not a day for national celebration, as dictated by our powers-that-be. This day in 1788, when Captain Cook claimed these First Nations lands for the British empire, is a day of mass protest against the theft and genocide that has continued.

Radical Women and Freedom Socialist Party will rally and march with the Indigenous Social Justice Association – Melbourne as a Stop Deaths in Custody contingent on this Invasion Day. Always was, always will be!

Before the rally starts at Parliament House, we will meet nearby at 9.45 am on the corner of Little Bourke & Spring Streets. To let us know you’re joining us, contact rw.aus@radicalwomen.org

For more about the contingent, see the ISJA Melb event on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/events/4474418272784549

Fighting for an ecosocialist future: Participants report on the blockade of the Port of Newcastle

Radical Women and the Freedom Socialist Party are sending a team to Newcastle to participate in the mass 50-hour blockade of the Port of Newcastle, infamously known as the world’s largest coal port.

Come to this meeting to hear all about the ten days of protest demanding real action on climate change, including the cancellation of all new fossil fuel projects. Hear about the ecosocialist solutions we advocate and the responses we receive.

Solidarity Salon, 113 Spring Street, Reservoir

Dinner served at 6:30 pm for a $10 donation. Discussion starts at 7 pm.
