Movie showing and benefit for Afghanistan earthquake victims

KABUL GIRLS
See the film, meet the filmmakers

Movie poster with black backgroung, photo of young woman's face with half covered by Arabic writing

Get an inside view of women's lives under the Taliban in the country where the U.S. waged its longest war. Written and directed by Afghanistani human rights activists Masooma Ibrahimi and Masood Eslami, "Kabul Girls" portrays the hardships women face under the right-wing religious regime and how they depend on each other for survival. The event will raise funds to aid people in the Herat region of Afghanistan, where, partly due to restrictive gender roles, 90% of deaths from three catastrophic earthquakes this October were women and children. The 73-minute film was released in 2020. Q & A with the filmmakers will follow the showing.

Doors open at 6:30pm. $5-10 door donation. Light snacks and drinks available for donation.

Feminists against capitalist globalism: Lessons of the WTO battle of Seattle

Large group of marchers at the anti-WTO march in Seattle, carrying bright yellow signs Stop Corporatee Globalism and Fair Trade Not Free Trade in front of a red Radical Women banner and a Yellow Freedom Socialist Party banner

In 1999 feminists, including Radical Women, helped build a massive solidarity movement that shut down a World Trade Organization conference in a five-day protest known as the “battle of Seattle.” The international action united tens of thousands of unionists, environmentalists, women, youth, and indigenous people to oppose the WTO’s neo-liberal, top-down agenda. Learn how the spirited, inclusive movement was developed. Get a socialist feminist analysis of Israel's war on Gaza and the dire situation of Palestinian women and civilians. Special film showing

Indigenous survival and climate crisis in the far north

On a light blue background, a graphic of a strip of film with one frame showing an Inuit woman with a child in parkas with fur lined hoods against a snowy background and the words Inuit Knowledge and Climate Change

This fascinating documentary, "Qapirangajuq: Inuit Knowledge and Climate Change," reveals how global warming is disastrously affecting the culture and survival of the Native people who live at the top of the world. The 54-minute film shows the life of Inuit women and men who are deeply tied to a way of life based on hunting and fishing. They are the experts for understanding their land and wildlife, and how they can adapt to a warming world. The Canadian film was made in 2010 and is in the Inuktitut language with subtitles. Discussion will follow.

Fundi: The Story of Ella Baker

Black and white photo of Ella Baker

Ella Baker, a leader and pioneer of the civil rights movement, was also known as “Fundi” – Swahili for those who teach and inspire younger generations. She was a founding member of Student Non-violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), which defied white supremacist violence with courageous protests and sit-ins for integration and voting rights.

She was a great mentor to young activists, with no tolerance for bureaucracy or co-optation. What can present-day activists for racial justice learn from Ella Baker? This inspiring 60-minute film provides many lessons for today’s freedom fighters. Discussion follows.
