Special meeting
Report-back from Standing Rock
Radical Women Organizer Gina Petry and Freedom Socialist Party activist Patrick Burns will report on their recent week in North Dakota to support the Water Defenders' heroic fight against the Dakota Access Pipeline. They witnessed the November 20 militarized assault on the unarmed activists. Petry also interviewed women leaders and members of the Indigenous Youth Council. Burns collaborated with Labor for Standing Rock and helped construct winter shelter. Petry and Burns will also discuss the government's recent decision to deny a permit for the last stage of the pipeline and offer their views on what's next.

Malignant misogyny is as intrinsic to the Trump campaign as are racism, anti-immigrant bias and chauvinistic flag-waving. Trump routinely slams not only Hillary Clinton but also female journalists and the entire gender. Yet Clinton, representing the pro-capitalist Democratic Party, offers no solutions for working women or men and will not make fundamental change.
How do socialist feminists oppose male chauvinism and bigotry while also taking a principled stand against Big Business politics? Air your concerns, debate the issues, and get involved!

Discover Socialist Feminism: From Theory to Action!
This gathering is full of thought-provoking topics and discussions. It includes a report contrasting two contemporary feminist viewpoints -- socialist feminism and radical feminism. Radical Women is socialist feminist, believing that the capitalist economic system upholds patriarchy and spawns violence against women because inequality is the source of super-profits. Radical feminist leaders point to a male, heterosexual culture as the source of women's subjugation. These opposing viewpoints play out in different approaches to such issues as transgender rights and building allies. Also on the agenda: solidarity with women in other parts of the world and plans for a seriously spooky Halloween celebration. Everyone welcome!

Helen Collier
presents the second book in her trilogy
"The Two Worlds of Ms. Anna"
Be part of this stimulating gathering where Ms. Collier will read from The Two Worlds of Ms. Anna, the second book in her trilogy of novels. This magical, powerful book is an odyssey of a Black woman's struggle to find happiness, independence and self-worth in a complex world defined by race. Ms. Anna is trapped between the supernatural world and the harsh realities she must confront in her own world.
Collier discusses race and its affect on many love relationships between Black and white people in the U.S. Through the life-and-death struggles Ms. Anna faces when she returns to her family and community, the reader is reminded of the tragedies domestic violence causes in the lives of children. Collier's writing invites the reader to examine racism from a different perspective especially when it involves the lives of women. After the reading, there will be time for open discussion.

The Fight for Fundamental Rights for Trans People
Film showing: "Toilet Training"
This 30-minute documentary addresses the persecution and violence that transgender folks face in public bathrooms. Drawing on stories of people who have been harassed, arrested or beaten for trying to use the bathroom that fits their gender identity, the video focuses on the right to access public spaces. It also discusses questions of legal rights and health effects through interviews with lawyers, social workers and activists. Created by transgender videographer Tara Mateik and the Sylvia Rivera Law Project, an organization committed to ending gender identity discrimination.
Guest Speaker: Tobi Hill-Meyer
After the film, Tobi Hill-Meyer, a transgender activist from Gender Justice League, will share information on the threat posed by transphobic Initiative 1515. Join the discussion about to stop this attack and enable equal bathroom access for all.

Unpacking Transphobia
Be part of this timely look at the Radical Women statement "Unpacking Transphobia," by Emma Allen. The essay clarifies the ideological differences between radical feminists and socialist feminists that play out in polar-opposite attitudes toward the transgender community. Allen argues that transphobia poisons feminism from within and explains that women and trans folk are fundamental allies, because the oppressions they suffer have shared roots in patriarchy and the private property system. "Citizen: An American Lyric": racism through a poet's eyes
This month's gathering will discuss the recently published book "Citizen: An American Lyric" by Jamaica-born poet Claudia Rankine. Critics describe the book as "marrying prose, poetry, and the visual image... Citizen investigates the ways in which racism pervades daily American social and cultural life, rendering certain of its citizens politically invisible" and struggling to survive. Come talk about the ideas Rankine presents and what can be done to combat white supremacy on an individual and collective level.

Early days of the Coalition of Labor Union Women

What can be done when organizations that were formed to stand up for all workers treat people of color and women as second class citizens? In the 1960s and ‘70s, working women in and out of unions fought to revolutionize the U.S. labor movement and make it truly representative of the whole working class. That involved a fight with the predominantly, but not exclusively, white male officialdom. A key battlefield was the Coalition of Labor Union Women (CLUW). Would it be window dressing for the male leadership, who were under intense pressure from the feminist movement, or help organize millions of unorganized women workers and pry open the doors of high-paid craft unions to everyone, regardless of race or sex?
Guerry Hoddersen represented Radical Women in this struggle, whose outcome still reverberates in today's labor movement. Learn this exciting history and share ideas on how to wage the good fight for unions that are militant, democratic, effective and inclusive. Everyone welcome.

The action will highlight the Catholic Church's role in undermining women's health and call for a united, multi-issue fight for the entire spectrum of reproductive care from birth control and abortion to affordable childcare and ending forced sterilization.
