A Speak-out for justice!
Feminists demand an end to police violence
from Ferguson to Seattle

The failure to charge Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson for the murder of Michael Brown has ignited collective outrage at the system's blatant disregard for lives of African Americans. Across the country and the world, communities of color and a multiracial mix of students, women and workers have marched, rallied and engaged in civil disobedience. Youth and women of color have played a bold leadership role.
What will it take to stop a racist injustice system? How can a multi-racial feminist movement be built that overcomes the historic failure of middle-class women's organizations to highlight the needs of women of color? Bring your outrage and ideas to this conversation about how to forge a militant movement that recognizes the contributions of women of color to fight police abuse both locally and nationally. Activists will kick-off the discussion and there will be an open mic with plenty of time for everyone to share stories, questions, poems and shout-outs. All are welcome.

Free Nestora Salgado:
Indigenous leader, feminist and political prisoner
Special guest: Grisel Rodriguez, Nestora Salgado's daughter
Rodriguez will discuss the latest efforts to win freedom for her mother, Nestora Salgado. Salgado is a U.S. citizen and resident of Renton, as well as a community leader in her hometown of Olinalá, Guerrero in Mexico. As elected coordinator of an indigenous community security force, Nestora instilled in the women of Olinalá the courage to defend themselves against violence and mobilized the community as a whole against government corruption and organized crime. Local officials retaliated by arresting her on trumped-up charges, denying her legal representation, and holding her in inhumane prison conditions. Learn how you can get involved in the International Day of Action for Nestora on August 21, the one-year anniversary of her arrest.
The meeting will also feature a discussion of why in the 21st century women all over the world are still "the second sex" and the feminist response to it. All are welcome!

Neshoba: The Price of Freedom

Neshoba County, Mississippi was burning with racial hatred at the height of the civil movement. The 1964 Freedom Summer campaign had mobilized courageous young activists, women and men, Black and white, to establish Freedom Schools and register African Americans to vote. In June 1964, a mob of Klansmen murdered James Chaney, Andrew Goodman, and Michael Schwerner. Neshoba tells the story of these three heroic young men, the movement that inspired them, and the long struggle to bring their killers to justice in a place that is still dealing with the legacy of a violent and racist past.
