Domestic Violence Awareness Month
Take a Stand against Domestic Violence!
Join the Pacific NW Alliance to Free Marissa Alexander in bannering to demand an end to violence against women and a pardon for Ms. Alexander, found guilty of assault for attempting to defend herself against her abusive husband. Alexander, an African American mother living in Florida, fired a warning shot to back off her attacker. Though no one was hurt, she was denied a "stand your ground defense" and sentenced to 20 years.
Gather at the Madison St. overpass of I-5 in downtown Seattle.

Reform or Revolution
Discover one of the classics of Marxist literature, written by a heroine of European socialism.
Rosa Luxemburg (1871-1919) was a revolutionary leader, an economist, and a respected political theorist despite the prejudices against her as a woman, a Polish immigrant to Germany, and a Jew. She was assassinated by the government and rightwing paramilitaries after helping lead an attempted workers' uprising. Her pamphlet, Reform or Revolution, answers the still-burning question of whether capitalism is capable of evolving into a more humane system or whether a complete transformation must be accomplished by oppressed people taking the power into their own hands.

She had a restraining order against her husband, a licensed gun, and no criminal history. She was denied a defense under Florida's "Stand Your Ground" law. Contemporary radical feminist leaders point to a male, heterosexual, porn-centered culture as the source of women's embattled status. Where do these different viewpoints lead on questions such as fighting rape, attitudes toward transgender people, and strategies for liberation? A film about iconic British Columbia artist Emily Carr. Working in the 1910s to 1930s, Carr was inspired by the carvings of First Nations people and the Canadian wilderness. She persisted with her painting at a time when there was little support for female artists. This engrossing 90-minute film paints a vivid portrait of Carr's life and critiques Canada's attempts during that time to assimilate Native peoples and eradicate their culture.

Overcoming Racism: A Radical Approach
Is racial conflict inevitable in a multi-racial society? Or is it the product of social and economic conditions--past and present--that can be understood and reversed?
This two-part class will use works by writers of color, feminists and radicals to explore these questions and the important leadership role of people of color in all the social justice movements. The challenges and rewards of organizing across color lines as well as various political approaches to accomplishing this will be discussed.

The Washington state legislature is battling out the budget crisis. Senate Republicans, with the help of three Democrats, unexpectedly rammed a proposal through at the end of last week. The Washington Federation of State Employees characterizes it as a "screw you" budget that slashes crucial services.
Learn about developing protest efforts and how you can take part. What needs to happen to really protect education, safety net programs, jobs and more? Is the Democrats' proposed budget much better? Without real alternatives that tax the rich and end corporate give-aways, their budget is mostly a sleight of hand. Help explore what can be done to fight for a better solution.
