Immigrant Women Battle for a Better World
Special Film Showing: Made in LA
Three Latina immigrants are spotlighted in this Emmy award-winning documentary. Lupe, Maura, and Maria fight tenaciously to hold a popular clothing retailer accountable for the abuses of its sweatshop subcontractors. Personal stories, intimate interviews, and protest footage highlight their organizing efforts, which include a spirited national boycott and a legal fight for unpaid wages and safe working conditions.

Asian Pacific Heritage Month celebration
Artists Mia Nakano, Lenore Chinn and Nellie Wong speak about turning art into a collective voice for social change and why the visibility of Asian American queers and women is so important to the movements.
Lenore Chinn is an artist and activist primarily known for her super-realistic paintings documenting people of color and the LGBT community. A former member of the San Francisco Human Rights Commission, she is affiliated with the Asian Pacific Islander Cultural Center (APICC), Asian American Women Artists Association (AAWAA) and past president of Queer Cultural Center (Qcc).
Mia Nakano is a co-collaborator of The Visibility Project which is a collection of photography portraits that are part documentary, part activism, of Asian Pacific Islander queer women, transgender, and genderqueer communities. Mia is an artist, activist, and technology consultant, and has honed her skills working on documentary projects in China, Japan, Nepal, and the US. She is currently a co-director of Rayko Photo Center.
Nellie Wong has published three books of poetry, "Dreams in Harrison Railroad Park," "Death of Long-Steam Lady," and "Stolen Moments," as well as being widely anthologized in numerous books of poetry and prose. She is a long-time leader in Radical Women and a delegate to the San Francisco Labor Council.
There will be a poetry reading and a digital slide show, with ample time for discussion. An Asian Fusion Buffet will be served at 6:15 pm for a $7.50 donation, and the meeting begins at 7:00 pm. Being Artist. Being Aware. Being Arab-American.
with Happy/L.A. Hyder
Drawing on the concept of home, Happy/L.A. Hyder weaves family history with her artistic vision, presenting her art-workings from the early 70s through today. Hyder is a fine artist in color photography, mixed-media & installation, writer, performer, and activist. She is the founder & director of LVA: Lesbians in the Visual Arts (1990 - 2003); present member of the SF Dyke March organizing committee; and member of the advisory board of Aorta Radical Art Magazine. 'Being Artist…' was first presented at the Arab American National Museum, Dearborn, MI.
Participants are invited to bring digital cameras and will be sent into the streets to photograph a finite number of images, using Hyder's instructions, then return to share their findings. Please make sure your memory card is blank, to make downloading easier.
