Time to Fire Up an Anti-Capitalist Movement for Civil Rights
All out for the October 2nd March on Washington for Jobs, Justice and Peace!
The U.S. economic and political crisis is hitting the Black community harder than ever. Financial "recovery" means increasing corporate profits while unemployment for African Americans -- especially youth -- is soaring. And rightwingers turned criticism of racists in the Tea Party into fingerpointing at Shirley Sherrod. What will it take to win true equality and liberation for Blacks in this country? The Radical Women meeting features a special guest speaker from Sisters on the Rise, a young feminist organization from the Bronx. Join in an open discussion, which will include planning for a contingent to the October 2nd March on Washington initiated by the NAACP and the AFL-CIO.

Tasty supper, with vegetarian option, will be served at 7pm for an $8.00 donation. Meeting admission free. Childcare provided. Air conditioned. Everyone is welcome! Will be held at Freedom Hall, 113 West 128th St., Harlem, between Malcolm X Blvd. (Lenox Ave.) and 7th Ave., subways #2 or 3 to 125th St. For more information, call (212) 222-0633, email nycradicalwomen@nyct.net.

Women’s Rights Day Celebration
Special Film Showing and Discussion -
“One Woman, One Vote”

The vote for women was first proposed in July 1848, at the Seneca Falls Woman's Rights Convention. More than seven decades later, August 26, 1920, the 19th Amendment was passed granting U.S. women this historic right, commemorated as Women's Rights Day. This documentary highlights the struggles of both the suffragist leaders and the women and men who fought alongside them. It also takes a frank look at the divisions in the movement and the racism of privileged white activists.

Bring your perspective to an open discussion of the lessons from the battle for suffrage and what is needed to build a militant, multi-racial feminist movement today.

A “Blue-Plate Special” supper, with vegetarian option, will be served at 7:00pm for an $8.00 donation. Meeting admission free. Childcare provided. Everyone is welcome! Will be held at Freedom Hall, 113 West 128th St., Harlem, between Malcolm X Blvd. (Lenox Ave.) and 7th Ave., subways #2 or 3 to 125th St. For more information, call (212) 222-0633 or email nycradicalwomen@nyct.net.

Celebrating Lesbian/Gay/Bisexual/Transgender Pride Month
Special Film Showing and Discussion with Filmmaker Siobhan Gaynor-Kee:

“Reworking the Model: A Conversation with Trans Folks of Color”

This groundbreaking documentary presents a multifaceted view of trans people—their bodies, lives and experiences. Transgendered-identified people of color fashion their own representations of self as well as discuss crucial issues often neglected by the mainstream. The film critically examines the policing of genitalia as well as challenges in housing, employment, health and the way these all intersect with class, gender and racial identities. “Reworking the Model” moves away from a medicalized view and toward trans people telling their stories in their own voices.

Bring your perspective to the discussion with filmmaker Siobhan Gaynor-Kee, a 23 year-old Wells College graduate, transgender advocate, social activist and member of Radical Women.

Door donation $3.00. A summer salads buffet, with vegetarian option, will be served at 7:00pm for an $8.00 donation.

Marxist Feminism: Is it for you?

Guest Speaker: Helen Gilbert
Red Letter Press Managing Editor

Are you fed up with living in a world where bankers get trillions while working and poor people lose jobs, healthcare and homes?  Where being a woman, a person of color and/or queer means the deck is stacked against you? Do you ever dream of overhauling society from the ground up?  Seattle rebel Helen Gilbert, a member of Radical Women's National Steering Committee, will share her ideas on how the revolutionary combination of socialism and women's leadership provides the theory and guides the action for achieving a world where people, peace and the planet are the highest priorities.

The writers are leaders of the Partido Obrero Socialista (Socialist Workers Party of Mexico) and are on the frontline in developing a socialist program for women's liberation. The English version of the pamphlet was issued by Radical Women Publications at the request of the authors.
