A Marxist Look at Feminism and Women’s Leadership
Is feminism still relevant to the present-day battles for civil and human rights? Why is the leadership of women of color essential to radical change? How can sexism be confronted? Socialist feminist scholar Beatriz Paez will address these topics and review current writings by women’s rights historians and theoreticians who have contributed to a Left analysis of female emancipation.
The meeting begins at 7:00 p.m. at Solidarity Hall, 2170 W. Washington Blvd., Los Angeles (off the 10 Freeway at Western Ave., on bus lines #35, 207 and 550). A delicious fall supper, with vegetarian option, will be served at 6:30 p.m. for an $8 donation. All genders welcome.

Battle on, Sisters!
Women Leaders Defend Immigrants, Workers and Education
Featuring front-line fighters Cecilia Gill and Maria Del Carmen Sandoval, UC-Irvine custodians and members of AFSCME Local 3299; Julia Wallace, Black socialist and organizer against budget cuts; and Beatriz Paez, Queer feminist and immigrant rights activist. Freedom Schools L.A. Workshop:
The Radical Legacy of Black & Chicana Feminists
The present fight to defend and expand public education and social services in California has been largely organized and led by women of color. The Los Angeles chapter of the March 4th Coalition created the Freedom Schools Los Angeles during the summer to keep alive the enthusiasm and organizing against the budget cuts to schools. This workshop is part of this effort and will highlight the hidden history of Black and Chicana feminists in the Civil Rights and Chicana/o Movements and draw out the lessons for today's defense of abortion, immigrant workers, LGBT folks and other human rights battles.
Other topics that will be covered include the backlash against feminism, strategies to confront sexism, and the connections between women's rights and issues of race, class and sexuality.
Class materials available for a donation. Spanish translation available upon request. All genders welcome.

L.A. Radical Women Meeting
Estamos en la Lucha:
Immigrant Women Light the Fires of Resistance
In the face of poverty, ICE raids, jingoist legislation and racist Minutemen, women have emerged as leaders in the immigrant upsurge. Her paper will be reviewed by IATSE unionist Karen Schmidt. Bring your ideas on what is needed to build a vibrant movement to open la frontera and defend immigrants of all ethnicities.

The Feminist Stake in Fighting Fascists
The subjugation of women is central to the ideology of right-wing groups such as the Nazis and Ku Klux Klan. The Nazis plan a rally to promote their sexist, racist, anti-Semitic, xenophobic and homophobic bigotry in L.A. on Saturday, April 17. The important role feminists need to play in counter-demonstrating against these multi-issue extremists will be the focus of discussion at Radical Women's monthly meeting.
Bring your ideas on what is needed to build a vibrant movement to defend all working people against fascist groups.
The discussion begins at 7:00 p.m. at Solidarity Hall, 2170 W. Washington Blvd., Los Angeles (off the 10 Freeway at Western Ave., on bus lines #35, 207 and 550). A spring supper, with vegetarian option, will be served at 6:30 p.m. for an $8 donation.

Black History Month Celebration
The Myth of a Post-Racial Society
During Barak Obama's campaign for president, the media promoted the idea that the U.S. had become colorblind by embracing his candidacy. But is colorblindness even a worthy or achievable goal in this country?
Victorious San Francisco 8 defendant Ray Boudreaux, L.A. public school teacher Linda Guthrie and Chicana feminist Beatriz Paez discuss the so-called "post-racial" society and how it measures up to the reality of poor and working people's lives, 60 years after the civil rights movement.
Join a freewheeling discussion and celebrate the ongoing struggle for "Freedom Now!"
Doors open at 6:00pm, $3 donation requested. At 6:30pm there will be a Louisiana style feast for a $9 donation. Work exchanges are available for students, low-income and unemployed people. A portion of the evening's proceeds will benefit Haiti relief.

Defend Reproductive Justice and Healthcare for All!
In San Francisco, for the sixth straight year, Radical Women members and others in Bay Area Coalition for Our Reproductive Rights (BACORR) will protest the misnamed "Walk for Life" on January 23. The right wing "Walk for Life" will march against abortion on the anniversary of Roe v. Wade, busing thousands of anti-abortion, anti-queer bigots into the gayest city in all the land! Join this counter-protest for full reproductive rights: abortion, no forced sterilization, sex education, free contraceptives, queer rights and immigrant rights.
The Los Angeles Reproductive Rights contingent will be heading to San Francisco on Friday, January 22 and returning to Los Angeles on Sunday, January 24. To carpool to the demo or for more information, call 323-732-6416 or email radicalwomenla@earthlink.net.

No More Broken Promises-March for Immigrant Rights!
President Obama sought votes for his presidency by pledging positive changes in U.S. immigration policy. Instead, one year after he took office, we still have ICE raids, deportations and e-verifications.
Radical Women and the Freedom Socialist Party urge you to stand with all our immigrant sisters and brothers as we protest this list of broken promises and demand immediate, unconditional amnesty for all immigrants, an end to raids, checkpoints, deportations, e-verify, and the murderous wall at the U.S./Mexico border. Corporations are allowed to cross borders with no restrictions; so should workers seeking better lives for themselves and their families.
The protest is being organized by the Southern California Immigration Coalition, of which Radical Women and the Freedom Socialist Party are proud members. The rally is in front of the U.S. Department of Labor, in downtown Los Angeles.
Join the FSP and RW contingent! Look for our picket signs at the site or contact: 323-732-6416, radicalwomenla@earthlink.net or fspla@earthlink.net.

Why is Obama's Healthcare Bill a Failure for Women?
President Obama and Congress are almost ready to dispense the so-called "Affordable Health Care for America Act" on working people, which is being marketed as the medical plan that will provide the relief that is needed. The bottom line -- the bill will further limit women's right and access to abortion, deny undocumented immigrants any form of insurance coverage or medical service, forestall cancer preventative diagnostics and cut benefits for the elderly. Bring your ideas and strategies to this roundtable discussion on building a grassroots movement to guarantee universal coverage for everyone.
Hearty winter supper served at 6:30pm for an $8 donation. Childcare available, please call three days in advance.

Quality Healthcare On-Demand: What Women Need!
What will it take to achieve affordable healthcare for all? President Obama's statements that his national plan would not provide insurance for undocumented immigrants or extend federal funds for abortions simply courts the right-wing's racist and sexist agenda. The Democratic-led congress has tried to distance itself from a single-payer or public option. Bring your ideas and strategies to this roundtable discussion on building a grassroots movement to guarantee universal coverage for everyone.
An autumn supper, with vegetarian option, will be served at 6:30pm for an $8.00 donation. The meeting will be held at Solidarity Hall, 2170 W. Washington Blvd. in Los Angeles (off the 10 Freeway at Western Ave., on bus lines 35, 207 & 550).

Women's Rights in Mexico: A Left Outlook
Today, the same spirit of resistance that won Mexico freedom from Spain 188 years ago is infusing the battle for women's liberation. Feminist leaders, Leda Silva Victoria and Angelica Garcia Olivares, of the Partido Obrero Socialista/Socialist Workers Party of Mexico are developing a radical platform for women's emancipation. Radical Women will review Notes from the Female Reality in Mexico - a groundbreaking study that uncovers factors contributing to inequality in areas such as health, migration, violence, employment and poverty.
